I've been thinking for awhile now about supports and I've come up with a solution. I originally wanted to use wooden canvases but the cost will be prohibitive, so I found another soltuion. I'm gluing 5" X 7" wooden panels to 2" Styrofoam boards. When they are dry, I'll cut them apart and have a good surface to work on. I'll paint the sides black.
Twelve panels fit perfectly on one Styrofoam board, which means that I'll be doing this another 9 times.
